4月1日愚人節，法國網站發表文章《薄熙來宣佈：中國進入新時代》。文章說，保守運動的共產黨強人薄熙來奪得了北京的權力。經過兩個星期的不確定性和傳聞，這個結局驚訝了所有觀察員。
德國之聲報道說，4月1日這一天，傳播謊話消息和假新聞的主要是媒體。經典新聞之一是BBC在1957年4月1日播出的一段有關瑞士人"收穫麵條"的消息。觀眾在畫面上看到，瑞士農民從樹上摘下一把把長長的意大利麵條。2007年4月1日德國媒體的一條報道曾引起強烈反響，消息稱"混沌電腦俱樂部"在一款個人稅務軟件中發現了一種木馬程序，可以將私人數據傳到聯邦刑事局。
