一年一度的中秋又來了，先祝侃英語的讀者們，中秋快樂，闔家團圓。
每逢中秋，我總會想起·明月幾時有》，後來經過鄧麗君、王菲等演唱，更深入人心。
水調歌頭·明月幾時有

明月幾時有？把酒問青天。
不知天上宮闕，今夕是何年？
我欲乘風歸去，又恐瓊樓玉宇，高處不勝寒。
起舞弄清影，何似在人間？
轉朱閣，低綺戶，照無眠。
不應有恨，何事長向別時圓？
人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓缺，此事古難全。
但願人長久，千里共嬋娟。
我相信只要上過學的中國人都能背誦出幾句，特別是最後一段「人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓缺，此事古難全。但願人長久，千里共嬋娟。」
寫得真是太有詩意了！
說到這裏，熟悉侃哥的朋友都知道，接下來要講翻譯了。
今天咱們就選取許淵沖和林語堂的版本，看看名家是如何處理這最後一段的。
這樣，講翻譯之前，我們還是先梳理一下最後一段的中文含義：
1.「人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓缺，此事古難全。」
人世間的悲，歡，離，合，就像天上的月亮的陰，晴，圓，缺，自古以來都是難以周全圓滿的。
2.「但願人長久，千里共嬋娟。」
前半句比較容易理解，就是希望人們能健康平安。
後半句的「嬋娟」在古詩文中多形容女子，這裏形容月亮，「千里共嬋娟」就是即使相隔千里，也能在中秋之夜共賞天上的明月。
下面來看譯文，先看許老的：
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man will live long as he can!
Though miles apart, we'll share the beauty she displays.
許老的譯文最大的特色就是忠實原文，並嚴格「對仗」，幾乎字字對牢，請看：
「悲歡離合」：sorrow（悲）， joy（歡），part（離），meet（合）。
「陰晴圓缺」：bright（晴）， dim（陰），wax（圓）， wane（缺）
對，這裏順便補充一下：wax做動詞時表示「月圓」，而 wane做動詞時表示「月缺」。
這些詞的選擇確實也十分精準。
另外，許老在「and she may wax or wane」，使用了「she」，巧妙地完成了對月亮的擬人化，也為後句「the beauty she displays」埋下伏筆。
「此事古難全」，譯得很直白：There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.（自古以來，就沒什麼是完美的）。
「但願人長久」，也被譯得很直白：So let us wish that man will live long as he can!
來看「千里共嬋娟」，Though miles apart, we'll share the beauty she displays.（雖然相隔千里，我們仍然能共享她所呈現的美麗）。
因為前面許老把 moon比作 she了，所以讀者看到這句的 she，就能明白指的是月亮，也確實翻譯出了原文中的「嬋娟」。
再來看林語堂的譯文：
But rare is perfect happiness--
The moon does wax, the moon does wane,
And so men meet and say goodbye.
I only pray our life be long,
And our souls together heavenward fly!
總體感覺，相比許淵沖，林語堂的譯文更簡潔，更少地忠於原文，更多地自我發揮…
你看第一句先說了結論「此事古難全」：but rare is perfect happiness
還用了倒裝句，原序為 perfect happiness is rare（完滿的幸福是罕見的），理解他倒裝的原因是為了強調「難全」（rare）。
「月有陰晴圓缺」，被譯為 The moon does wax, the moon does wane。
「人有悲歡離合」，被譯為 And so men meet and say goodbye。
總覺得這裏譯得比較倉促，不如許老的選詞準確、全面。
「但願人長久」，I only pray our life be long，「我只祈禱我們的生命能長長久久」，這句還是比較符合原文含義。
但「千里共嬋娟」的譯文：And our souls together heavenward fly!字面含義為「我們的精神一起翱翔於天際」。
這裏的 heavenward，拆開是 heaven（天）+ward（朝向），heavenward fly就是「朝天上飛」。
林語堂這裏似乎對「共嬋娟」提出了自己的理解：
他認為明月是一個介質，把相關遠隔千里的人們聯繫在一起，彼此的精神可以一起遨遊於天際。
總而言之，許老的翻譯更嚴謹、更對仗、更忠於原文，而林語堂的翻譯更簡潔，但也個人發揮的程度更大。
