入侵烏克蘭第26日，俄軍推進速度與上周相比明顯加快，但也讓戰況更加慘烈、雙方死傷更為嚴重，烏克蘭「亞速營」稱，光是馬里烏波爾（Mariupol）的白天，幾乎平均每10分鐘就會受到1次來自俄軍的炮襲；烏國官方統計，截自目前俄軍總共投下約1080枚導彈，造成無數平民傷亡，其中還包括112名兒童被炸死，使俄方倍受國際譴責。

據烏克蘭戰略通信中心指出，俄軍於當地時間20日深夜，向被圍困多日的馬里烏波爾發出最後通牒，要求市長於今（21）日清晨5時前投降，但遭到該市市長嚴詞拒絕；同時俄軍還聲稱，擊殺93名「身穿平民服裝的民族主義份子」，試圖以此掩蓋屠殺平民的事實。
